Patikawa on tanimbar: In Tanimbar, there was an idol behind the village. The idol was called "Hula Soxu," which means, "Great God.", It was in the form of a maqeuq (mangeung, or shark), with the head of an ordinary fish. That is, the head was like that of an ordinary fish, but the tail was like that of a shark. It was in the alang-alang grass, beneath a hanua tree. They covered part of its body with cloths, and periodically brought it new cloths. In their cult, they do not kill sharks, and if they are in the water, the sharks will not harm them. I have never seen the members of the cult feed a shark. They believe the shark is their god. This was on the south coast. I have seen people call sharks on the north coast of Tanimbar, but this was not to worship them. Every August, they kill sharks that come in schools at Adodo (Fordata). (There is an Adodo at Fordata, and another Adodo at molo). The tuan negeri gathers food of different varieties that come from the fields, and brings it to the shore, where the sharks will come. There he beats upon an instrument of bamboo. Those who will kill shark must wait a little back from the water. Then the tuan negeri speaks and becons to the sharks until many have come in, and when he feels the time to be ripe, he commands the people to come with their spears. Some have steel spears, but others have only spears of bamboo. The tuan negeri must stab first. then the rest join in. I do not knowthe words he used to callthe sharks, and I doubt if anyone else knewthem. Sometimes they killed up to 40 or 50 sharks. This ceremony was not for religious purposes, but the people killed to eat. There was no "kakehan" on Tanimbar. Kakehan is found around Seram.
