Lis Hukom Manusiwa on the 1957 Oma-Haruku war: The piece of land wasn't very big, but the Oma people said, "This land belongs to us," whereas the Haruku people also said, "This land belongs to us." According to the old people, that land was really Oma's, but was sold by the old king to the Haruku people without the knowledge of his subjects. The old king was dead, and the people knew only that the land was theres. But the Haruku people said that they had bought the land, so there developed a deadly struggle between the Oma people and the Haruku people in which several lost their lives. The women even went withtheir men, carrying rocks upon their heads, whereas the men were armed with spears and parangs (swords). At the sound of the tifa, the whole village of Oma would leave for the disputed area, and there would follow great strife, with many curses and abuses. People fell on both sides. One young Haruku man fought valiantly, and when he was wounded, and his comrades had fallen back, he fought on alone. His one thought was that he was defending his land. But in the end he was hacked to death by parang blows.
